The University of Franeker and the Abroad Program

The University of Franeker was a university in Franeker, Friesland, Netherlands. It is the second-oldest university in the Netherlands, following only Leiden University. The university was founded in 1824 and closed in 2008.

The school has a fascinating history. During its first 150 years, more than a third of its students came from abroad. In addition, one quarter came from provinces outside the Netherlands. Foreign students were primarily from the German Empire and countries surrounding the Baltic Sea and North Sea, and Hungary. Those from Hungary, for example, were primarily attracted by the university’s geographical proximity. Its international character was further emphasized by the fact that one hundred seven professors came from outside Friesland.

During this period, the church had its own reasons for creating Franeker. It wanted modern education for pastors, but also the study of the Bible in basic languages. The university’s tolerant policy weakened the position of the ruling church. In addition, Descartes’ philosophy found a foothold at Franeker, making it the most Cartesian university in the Netherlands after 1660. The academy’s scientific research program was theoretically formulated and therefore less susceptible to orthodoxy.

In the meantime, the Academy has reopened its Academie. Franeker has an incredibly rich history, and five traditional city palaces and a famous planetarium. The Academy’s core values of quality and devotion are at the heart of its identity. This identity was once hidden behind closed door fronts, but in 2016 it was declared a part of the city’s history. It has become a defining feature of the city and its people.

Today, the Franeker Martinikerk is the home of postgraduate students from the University of Groningen. Applicants must be a Frieslander.

The University of Friesland is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands. It was founded during the Pacification of Ghent, a process that sought to unite the Netherlands against King Philip II. Its mission was to foster peace and prosperity and the university has achieved that goal. However, the institution still faces challenges, and many students may have to move to another city to attend. The name of this university may change in the future.
